UNDIP Electrical Engineering Student Wins Gold Medal at WYIE 2026 Malaysia with Micorse Innovation

Fatih Muqtafi Liamrillah, an Electrical Engineering student at UNDIP, won a Gold Medal at WYIE 2026 Malaysia with Micorse, an IoT-based biological communication system.

Universitas Diponegoro students have once again brought pride to the institution. Fatih Muqtafi Liamrillah, a student in the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering program, together with a cross-disciplinary UNDIP team, won a Gold Medal at the international World Young Inventors Exhibition (WYIE) 2026, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia, on 17–20 May 2026.

WYIE is an international innovation exhibition and competition that forms part of the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX). The event brings together young innovators from various countries to present their research and innovative technologies before an international panel of judges. The participation of the Universitas Diponegoro team in this event reflects UNDIP students’ commitment to producing innovative work that can compete on a global scale.

In the competition, the Universitas Diponegoro team introduced an innovation titled Micorse: Biological Communication Interface, an intelligent integration system that combines IoT sensor-based hardware with an interactive software dashboard. This innovation was developed as a proof of concept to read the biological response of the Lactobacillus spp microorganism to sound vibration stimuli through changes in pH (acidity) levels. Data collected from the sensor is then sent in real time to a web-based dashboard, where it is processed and translated into Morse Code that can be understood by humans.

As an early-stage design, Micorse not only displays biological data readings but is also equipped with visual, sound (beep), and vibration (haptic) feedback. This approach demonstrates how electronics, programming, and biology can be integrated into a single, still-evolving communication system.

Cross-Disciplinary Research Team

This collaborative research team was developed by students from various academic disciplines, namely:

This cross-disciplinary collaboration became the driving force behind Micorse’s development, combining data analysis, systems engineering, biotechnology, and digital interface design into a single innovative platform. Through this approach, the team successfully demonstrated that a UNDIP student research idea can be developed into a work that is competitive at the international level.

Fatih Muqtafi Liamrillah shared that this achievement was a valuable experience for the entire team. “Through Micorse, we wanted to show that microorganisms widely known for their role in food fermentation, such as Lactobacillus spp., can also be explored as a biological communication medium based on pH response. Although this innovation is still in its early stage of development, it opens up opportunities for further research in biotechnology, alternative communication systems, and health technology — particularly for developing more inclusive interfaces in the future,” he said.

This achievement proves that Electrical Engineering students at UNDIP are capable of actively contributing to multidisciplinary innovation and competing on the international stage. It is hoped that this accomplishment will inspire other students to continue producing meaningful work, expand their research networks, and bring honor to Universitas Diponegoro through excellent, adaptive, and impactful contributions.
